‘Northanger Abbey’ online: Two web series, double the fun

By Jennifer Abella

“The Lizzie Bennet Diaries” and “Emma Approved” aren’t the only Jane Austen adaptations to hit the Internet. Jane Austen’s “Northanger Abbey” has (at least) two adaptations online. Here’s a brief look at them:

What are they

“Northbound” (NB) debuted June 4, 2015.

“The Cate Morland Chronicles” (CMC) debuted July 7, 2016.

Where you can find them

NB: YouTube — for FREE! For “Northbound,” click here.

CMC: Also on YouTube — for FREE! For CMC, click here.

Number of episodes

NB: 40. Episodes from 2 minutes to 8 minutes.

CMC: 45, plus some optional bonus videos. Episodes run from 3 minutes to 9 minutes.

NB: Catherine, from small-town Virginia, moves in with the Allens, family friends, in New York the summer before starting college there in the fall.

CMC: Catherine lands an internship at a magazine owned by the Allens, family friends, in Los Angeles.

NB: This Catherine is imaginative if introverted and bookish, playing up the “small-town girl in the big city.”

CMC: Passionate, opinionated and fun-loving, this Catherine is a geeky Fangirl with a capital F. She loves Harry Potter, “Star Wars” and, most of all, “The Mysteries of Udolpho,” a supernatural-themed teen soap opera..

NB: This outgoing Henry meets Catherine when she holes up in a bathroom during one of her first New York parties.

CMC: Child star — and Catherine’s longtime celeb crush — Henry Tilney is the lead actor in “The Mysteries of Udolpho.” He’s charming, easygoing — and flirty.

The Thorpes

NB: Catherine and Isabella meet when Jamie — Catherine’s sister and Isabella’s girlfriend — sets them up on a friend date. This John is a pseudo-intellectual, interested in using data to analyze the best pizza in New York.

CMC: This Isabella works at the magazine with Catherine. John is her playboy brother who comes to L.A. to visit. He plays up the rude, boorish behavior — he doesn’t like to take no for an answer.

Watch if you like …

NB: A low-key adaptation. The actress playing Catherine is very natural.

CMC: Pop culture, an outgoing heroine and diverse casting. This is an energetic, clever modernization.
