What to Watch

FURTHER VIEWING for the 2019 Jane Austen Summer Program. We’ll screen “Lizzie Bennet Diaries” and “Bride and Prejudice” during the program (see schedule), but here is a list of other adaptations you may want to see, listed in chronological order of their release.


Pride and Prejudice (1940)

Starring: Greer Garson, Laurence Olivier

Synopsis: Set in 19th century England, this adaptation of Pride and Prejudice follows the Bennet sisters as they navigate the social scene following the arrival of the two wealthy, eligible bachelors, Mr. Darcy and Mr. Bingley, and their mother’s subsequent matchmaking frenzy.

Starring: Elizabeth Garvie, David Rintoul

Synopsis: In this BBC mini-series, the adaptation is fully faithful to the novel, capturing every scene and historic detail as strong willed Elizabeth Bennet crosses swords with the haughty Mr. Darcy as her mother attempts marry her off by the end of the social season.

Starring: Jennifer Ehle, Colin Firth

Synopsis: Set in 19th-century England, this 6-episode BBC 6 TV mini series is a bit shorter than its 1980’s predecessor, but nonetheless it still dutifully follows Elizabeth Bennett as she navigates the social scene all while warding off her mother’s matchmaking and combating the arrogant Mr. Darcy in the process.

Starring: Rene Zellweger, Colin Firth, Hugh Grant

Synopsis: Set in modern day London, England, this romantic comedy follows the misadventures of Bridget Jones (Elizabeth Bennet), a writer at a publishing company, as she struggles to reinvent her life while searching for Mr. Right– and recording every hilarious detail in her diary along the way!

Starring: Kam Heskin, Orlando Seale

Synopsis: Set in modern day Utah, Elizabeth Bennet is a young college student who, while her roommates are busy trying to fall in love, is solely focused on her writing career. However, soon enough, she finds herself constantly running into, fighting with and (spoiler alert) falling in love with the haughty businessman, William Darcy on her journey to establish her career.

Starring: Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Martin Henderson

Synopsis: Set in India, this Bollywood adaptation of Pride and Prejudice follows the live of four unmarried daughters of a local Indian family as their mother schemes to marry them off to the new, wealthy bachelors in town- complete with a colorful soundtrack and dance numbers to boot!

Starring: Keira Knightly, Matthew Macfadyen

Synopsis: Staying true to the original novel, this adaptation featuring Kiera Knightley as Elizabeth Bennet is set in 19th century England and follows her as well as her sister’s struggles to cope with the newly arrived bachelors Mr. Darcy and Mr. Bingley as their mother plots their inevitable romantic matches.

Starring: Jemima Rooper, Elliot Cowan

Synopsis: The only fantasy adaptation of Pride and Prejudice ever made, this British TV series follows modern working woman Amanda Price and the chaos that ensues as she accidentally swaps lives with Austen’s heroine Elizabeth Bennet. While Elizabeth is trapped in 21st century London, Amanda is transported to Longbourne, England and struggles to keep the plot of the novel on track, only to find her presence wreaking havoc at every turn. Will each heroine’s story ever get sorted out?

LBDLogoThe Lizzie Bennet Diaries (2012-13)

Starring: Ashley Clements, Daniel Vincent Gord

Synopsis: This fresh, modern take on Pride and Prejudice uses a “vlogging” (a series of short videos) format to peek into the life of Lizzie Bennet, a graduate mass communications major living at home as she struggles to keep track of her sisters, avoid her mother’s romantic matchmaking and further her career. Of course, with the arrival of Mr. Bingley and Mr. Darcy, Lizzie’s life gets even more chaotic in this delightfully relatable mini series and the audience has to wonder- will any of these girls get their happily ever after?

Starring: Lily James, Sam Riley

Synopsis: The undead are a constant threat in this bloody adaptation of the P&P sendup novel of the same name.
