A Truth Universally Acknowledged: Introducing the Pride and Prejudice Reader Series

Welcome, friends, to the latest installment of JASP’s 2024 Austen-Brontë reader series! Following Maizie Ferguson’s recent foray into Charlotte Bronte’s Shirley, as well as JASP’s first-ever vlog series covering the classic novel Jane Eyre, I’ll be diving into Jane Austen’s most famous novel—that’s right, the one and only Pride and Prejudice—throughout the months of August and September.

Once again, we’ll be tackling the novel in the style of a book club, recapping a few chapters every week in sequential order. If you’d like to read along, the posting schedule will proceed as follows:

August 19: Volume I (ch. 1-23)
August 26: Volume II (ch. 24-42)
Sept. 2: Volume III (ch. 43-61)
Sept. 9: final thoughts & adaptations

Over the next four weeks, we’ll be dissecting one of the most beloved stories in literary history, revisiting familiar characters and swoon-worthy moments that delight even the hardest of hearts. It is a truth universally acknowledged that Pride and Prejudice is one of the greatest romances of all time, but why do we hold it in such high esteem? What makes Elizabeth Bennet the favorite of so many Austen fans? Why is Mr. Darcy still the ultimate romantic hero in the twenty-first century?

Most importantly, as part of JASP’s current Austen vs. Brontë series, how does Pride and Prejudice hold up against the near-contemporary works of the Brontë sisters?

Join me again on the JASP blog next week for answers to these questions and more. In the meantime, happy reading!
